Unattended Death Cleanup Process

Many unattended death clean ups involve a situation where the body has decomposed significantly. The rate of deterioration will vary depending on several factors including: cause of death, location, temperature, humidity, and many others. If you have discovered an unattended death, the first call should be to the authorities. We are able to begin the remediation process as soon as the police have cleared the scene.

  • Free Consultation – The odors and sights of an unattended death are highly distressing, and we want to help protect our clients from that experience whenever possible. Before any work can begin, a senior BioteamNY-PA technician will come to the property and do a hazard assessment to estimate the scope of work, and retrieve any documents you may need right away. Most homeowners insurance policies cover for this type of loss, if the property is insured, we can help you file a claim through the insurance company. If the loss is at an apartment, we will work with the apartment complex management and provide them a breakdown of the extent of the damage.

  • Remove Contamination Source – Usually, bodily fluids, blood, and odor-causing bacteria will have impacted multiple surfaces and items within the vicinity of the deceased. This includes furniture, fixtures, personal belongings, and the structure of the dwelling. If the property has sealed flooring that is undamaged, we expect to be able to clean and disinfect the floor without any removal. In any situation where blood or bodily fluids may have seeped to the subfloor through seams or baseboards, the flooring will need to be removed. In extreme cases, we may have to remove the subfloor to properly rid the impacted area of biohazardous materials.

  • Decontamination & Cleanup – Once the primary source of contamination has been removed and prepared for transport to an approved medical waste disposal facility, the rest of the cleanup can begin. We utilize a combination of tools, chemicals, testing, and techniques to ensure that the whole property has been treated and is free of the severe health hazards that are present due to the unattended death.

  • Odor Remediation – The decomposition process releases a noxious odor that can impact the entire home and its contents. The biohazard cleanup will significantly reduce the level of odor in the home, and we will perform additional odor treatment services as needed including fogging, machine treatments, and occasionally offsite laundry services.

It is our solemn responsibility to make sure that the home is safe to re-enter when the service has been completed, which means ensuring the whole home has been disinfected, sometimes down to the concrete foundation of the home. Our cleaning protocols are current with the IICRC, and we perform ATP testing throughout the home to verify and prove that our standards have been met or exceeded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything in the vicinity of the body will be impacted, either directly or indirectly due to the presence of odor-causing bacteria, including floor, walls, furniture, and personal belongings. All porous items that have been contaminated with blood or bodily fluids will need to be documented, disinfected and properly disposed of. This includes items like paper, books, fabrics, rugs. Some semi-porous items such as sealed wood and most non-porous items can be properly disinfected and saved. Please advise the senior technician if you have concerns about a particular item.

If an unattended death occurs in a vehicle, it is almost certain that the entire interior and upholstery of the vehicle will need to be removed to ensure that the source of contamination has been treated. Once the odor is eliminated, and our tests show that there is no actively growing bacteria, new interior can be installed. We will coordinate with repair facilities and your insurance company to provide the cleanup services.
